Over the years, I’ve come to expect nothing but the fullest attention paid to every detail at Wheaton-Warrenville South.
From this summer’s Red Grange 7-on-7 Classic (which has quickly grown from an idea to 32 of the top teams in Illinois) to literally every single detail on and off the field, head coach Ron Muhitch and the Tigers work hard to make everything run like clockwork.
The Red Grange Classic is now, hands down, the best 7-on-7 team event in Illinois. It’s that simple. Muhitch, who along with community support that always seems to rise to the occasion, has made the Red Grange Classic the place to be in the summer if your’re a top program. Again, Muhitch’s hard work and attention to detail was all over the Red Grange Classic.
Yet this is also a summer in which the Tigers football program is looking to climb another few rungs back up the IHSA state title contender ladder. The Tigers posted an 8-3 record in 2013, which followed a 4-5 season in 2012. While most programs around the state would happily live with an 8-3 season and a win in the opening round of the state playoffs, this isn’t your typical program. This is Wheaton Warrenville South.
At Wheaton Warrenville South, the only priority is winning a state title, and everything else is secondary. The 2014 Tigers? The offense has looked strong at times while also trying to work out the bugs. The same can be said for the defense, which — led by Northwestern commit Tommy Vitale — has also had good moments this summer.
The Tigers’ schedule — once again — is just brutal. South opens up at Glenbard West, hosts Maine South, then travels to face Morgan Park before starting the always-rugged DuPage Valley schedule.
Whether the Tigers are contenders or not in 2014, one thing is always certain at Wheaton Warrenville South. Look for this football program, led by its head coach to work hard and pay attention to every detail. It’s the only way that Muhitch seems to know.
