The Panthers (1-2, 1-2 in DuPage Valley Conference) had lost their first two games by a combined eight points despite allowing just 27 points. Hodges’ pick-six opened a 21-3 advantage. The standout running back later added a 48-yard touchdown run in the final minute to finish with 110 rushing yards. Sophomore Greg Newsome had two interceptions. Quarterback Shane Conway scored the Panthers’ first TD on a 1-yard run on the opening drive and threw a
…36-yard TD pass to Jace James on the team’s first drive of the third quarter. All five of Conway’s games completions were to James for 78 yards. After the Tigers (1-2, 1-2) won the coin toss but deferred the kickoff, the Panthers went 77 yards to score with 54 rushing yards by Hodges.
WW South senior Andrew Patinos kicked field goals of 31 and 40 yards. It was his first football game since recovering from an accident during his freshman track season in which he was struck in the head by a thrown discus. The Tigers’ injury troubles continued, however, as standout running back J.J. Johnson was lost for the second half after suffering a high left ankle sprain. On the play in which he was hurt, Johnson was playing quarterback and had been alternating with starter Jack Maher, who took over the previous game at Lake Park after Michael Stebbins broke his collar bone.
